Human rights are rights we have simply because we exist as human beings – they are not granted by any state. These universal rights are inherent to us all, regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. They range from the most fundamental – the right to life – to those that make life worth living such as the rights to food, education, work, health, and liberty.” (Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights).

Today we commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a milestone celebration the UN has called Human Rights 75, and the 30th Anniversary of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). We celebrate all that both have achieved and the impact on the international and national communities.

Throughout the year, the Human Rights 75 initiative has ‘[sought] to increase knowledge on the universality and indivisibility of human rights, especially among young people, inspire people to create a movement of shared humanity while empowering them to fight for their rights.’ (OHCHR).

In support and celebration of this significant milestone and to raise awareness of the impact and continued importance of the UDHR, we will continue sharing useful information about the UDHR throughout the week.
