On International Women’s Day, the theme “Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress” urges us to consider ways to empower and support women across the globe. This theme calls for tangible action to foster gender equality and drive positive change, emphasising the pivotal role investing in women plays in advancing societies.

At the heart of this theme lies the recognition of the importance of addressing the challenges women face, particularly those who are vulnerable.

Our Humanitarian team runs the Vulnerable Women Funding Project (VWFP). This three-year funding program focuses on promoting access to justice and delivering dedicated legal assistance to Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) women who may also be experiencing or are at risk of family and domestic violence (FDV) or who otherwise find themselves in perilous situations. These women not only struggle with the trauma of abuse but also with navigating the legal complexities that may arise in their matters. Additionally, we collaborate with other organisations, including health and social support services, to provide clients with wrap-around support.

The VWFP embodies the spirit of investing in women by removing barriers, empowering women with information and advice about their legal rights and connecting them to relevant organisations, subsequently strengthening communities and advancing progress.

By investing in initiatives like the VWFP, we not only provide immediate support to vulnerable women but also lay the foundations for long-term societal progress overall by:

 – Empowering Women: Access to legal assistance empowers women to assert their rights and break free from cycles of abuse. By equipping them with the tools and knowledge to navigate legal systems, the project enables women to reclaim agency over their lives.

 – Breaking Barriers: CaLD women often face cultural and linguistic barriers that exacerbate their vulnerability. The VWFP actively works to bridge these gaps, ensuring that language or cultural differences do not hinder access to justice and support.

 – Preventing Re-victimisation: Legal support is instrumental in preventing re-victimisation. By obtaining restraining orders and resolving legal issues, women can create safer environments for themselves and their children, breaking free from the cycle of violence.

 – Fostering Awareness and Advocacy: Initiatives like the VWFP contribute to raising awareness about the prevalence and impact of FDV. By advocating for the rights of vulnerable women, these projects drive broader societal change and challenge harmful norms and attitudes.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day and reflect on its theme, let’s reaffirm our commitment to supporting initiatives like the Vulnerable Women Funding Project. Standing in solidarity with vulnerable women, we uphold the principles of justice and equality, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable society. Together, let’s invest in women to make a difference today and accelerate future progress.
