Maria’s story: Reuniting a family after years apart

Navigating Australia’s migration system can be particularly challenging for families separated by international borders. Complex visa requirements and changing circumstances can create barriers to reunification, often prolonging uncertainty for those involved.

Circle Green’s Humanitarian service provides specialist migration legal assistance to people experiencing disadvantage, helping them understand their options and navigate complex visa processes.

Maria* married an Australian citizen in her home country and had two daughters before moving to Australia with her family in 2020. While her daughters, who were Australian citizens, were able to travel with her, Maria was forced to leave her young son behind.

When COVID-19 travel restrictions came into effect, Maria was unable to return to her home country. Her son remained in the care of Maria’s grandparents and extended family. What began as a separation became years apart, during which Maria could only watch from a distance as her young son grew into a teenager.

After experiencing family violence, Maria’s marriage broke down. She was granted a permanent visa in 2024 and approached Circle Green for assistance to bring her son to Australia. She was increasingly concerned about the wellbeing of her elderly grandparents and their ability to continue caring for her son.

We assisted Maria to prepare and lodge an application for her son’s permanent visa, supporting the family throughout the process.

The application was successful. Maria’s son was granted a permanent visa in December and arrived in Australia in March. After years apart, Maria and her son were finally reunited. Maria expressed her gratitude for the support she received from Circle Green in helping bring her family back together.

Maria’s story highlights how specialist migration legal assistance can help overcome complex legal barriers and reunite families after years of separation and uncertainty.
