During National Volunteer Week, we’re featuring some of the individuals whose passion and dedication enrich our community.

Subi Thomas – Humanitarian Volunteer

What made you want to get into volunteering?

I began volunteering at Circle Green to gain some experience working within a law related environment. As a law student, I was interested in exploring the different areas of law, so I had a better idea of where I wanted to go after I graduated.

How do you think access to legal support helps build stronger communities?

I believe that access to free legal services changes the lives of those experiencing hardship. It enables people to continue working, keep a roof over their heads or see their loved ones again; things a lot of people take for granted. Having a peace of mind around job or housing security and guaranteed safety for you and your family would most definitely build stronger communities.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about volunteering in community legal services?

Volunteering is a great opportunity to develop your skills and contribute to the lives of others in a meaningful way.

The work that you complete is fulfilling and it is great to be able to use the knowledge and skills that you’ve gained to help others.

Particularly, if you are studying a law degree, volunteering is a great way to introduce yourself to the legal system, even if you have no prior experience. Additionally, it gives you an insight into working at a community legal centre and whether it is an area you wish to pursue in your professional career.
