During National Volunteer Week, we’re featuring some of the individuals whose passion and dedication enrich our community.

Manpreet Kaur – Tenancy Volunteer

What do you enjoy the most about volunteering?

What I enjoy most about volunteering is the opportunity to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. It’s incredibly fulfilling to help individuals navigate legal challenges, especially when they may not have access to the support they need. The personal connection I get to form with clients and the satisfaction of seeing someone’s situation improve is what makes it so rewarding.

What inspired you to volunteer with Circle Green?

I was inspired to volunteer with Circle Green because of a senior student who worked at Circle green. I took her advice and researched Circle Green, their strong reputation for providing essential legal services to underserved communities was very impressive. As someone who’s passionate about social justice, I wanted to be part of a team that helps people in vulnerable situations, specifically tenants facing housing issues. Circle Green’s focus on empowering individuals through legal advocacy in tenancy matters really resonated with me.

How has volunteering connected you to the community in a meaningful way?

Volunteering at Circle Green has allowed me to connect deeply with the community, especially with people facing housing insecurity or disputes with landlords. Through this role, I’ve gained a better understanding of the challenges that many people face, and it’s given me a sense of responsibility to advocate for those who may not know their rights or have the resources to stand up for themselves.

The gratitude expressed by clients makes me feel more connected to the community and invested in helping it grow stronger.

Can you share a moment that reminded you why your volunteering matters?

One moment that really reaffirmed why my volunteering matters was when I helped a single mother who was facing eviction due to overdue rent. She was overwhelmed and unsure where to turn. After we went over her rights and connected her with resources, we were able to help delay the eviction and get her in touch with a financial assistance program. The relief in her eyes and the thanks she gave me made it clear that our work really does change lives, one case at a time.
